MSD Evaluation shows great results for Project K

Findings from a three-year evaluation of Project K, carried out by the Centre for Social Research (CSRE), Ministry of Social Development (MSD) have just been released.

On completion of the programme, the study found that Project K students had greater improvements than control group students in all three measured areas of self-efficacy and these improvements were maintained one year post-programme.  Self-efficacy increased for all students, but with Maori, male and low decile students benefiting the most.

As shown in the graphs below, participants showed significant improvements in their ability to master academic activities and to form and maintain friendships.  Among other findings the study found that Project K students, in particular Maori Project K students, obtained higher average total NCEA credits than a similar group of control students.

Project K provides ideal opportunities for students to increase their confidence.  On the programme, students’ experiences of success, even when confronted by difficult challenges, increases their judgments of their capabilities, which can then spread to other areas of their lives.
